Moisturizer For Oily Skin: Nourish and Hydrate
By annedee202
Should someone with Oily Skin use a Moisturizer?
If you have oily skin, you might think that you don’t need to use moisturizer. In fact, there are people with oily skin that eschew moisturizers since these leave their skin feeling heavy and greasy. Also, most women feel that using moisturizer will just add another level of shine to an already oily face. They also feel that the moisturizer will make the skin become more susceptible to breakouts and acne.
But really, moisturizers can do good, even with someone with oily skin. The key is to find the right moisturizer that will leave the skin feeling smooth but not oily. Moisturizers provide the skin with the hydration that it needs. The moisturizer works to lock in the water in your skin, protecting it especially in the cold weather. As a result, your skin feels silky smooth and less prone to wrinkles as well as breakouts.
A good moisturizer is necessary especially if you are using peeling creams or drying acne treatments, particularly those that contain benzoyl peroxide, Retin-A and Accutane. The moisturizer can help alleviate the accompanying flakiness and dryness.
So, go ahead, moisturize! The next articles will help you find the moisturizer that will suit your specific need.
Finding the Right Moisturizer for Oily Skin
Oily skin will still need the help of a good moisturizer. The question is, what is a good moisturizer for oily skin? Sometimes, you will need to experiment and read labels in order for you to find the moisturizer that works just right for you.
A good moisturizer will not only hydrate your skin but also control oil production.
When you are looking for the right moisturizer, you should consider the following factors:
- Sensitivity of your skin. Find a moisturizer that will not irritate the skin by blocking its pores. Look for the word “non-comodogenic” in the label.
- Oil-based vs. water-based moisturizers. Your skin is already oily so you will want to avoid an oil-based moisturizer. You should especially avoid mineral oils that tend to keep the moisture out of the face, instead of locking it inside.
- Textures. Look for a moisturizer that is light and non-greasy in texture. Gel moisturizers are usually lighter.
- Quick absorbing. When a moisturizer is quickly absorbed in the skin and doesn’t stay on the surface, the skin feels non-greasy. The quick absorption also means that nothing will stay on the surface to block the pores and cause breakouts.
Some Ingredients for a Good Moisturizer for Oily Skin
Read the label. It helps to know what to look for so that you not only get a moisturizer that locks in the moisture in your skin, as well as controlling oiliness and protecting your skin from the elements.
Here are some ingredients that can help you maintain youthful and shine-free skin:
Coenzyme Q10. This is an important ingredient that not only protects from the sun’s UV rays and also fights harmful antioxidants. This ingredient is perfect for oily skin.
Alpha hydroxyl acid (AHA). AHAs like glycolic acid and lactic acid helps maintain that shine-free look. These are also commonly water-soluble and easily absorbed by the skin.
Jojoba Oil. This oil’s makeup is very similar to the natural oil your body produces. That is why your skin can easily adapt to this oil. The good thing about jojoba oil is that it can actually help control oil production. Jojoba oil is quickly absorbed and will not result in breakouts.
Cynergy TK. This ingredient is a natural substance that is known for its ability to help your skin produce more elastin and collagen, two ingredients that are important in getting healthy-looking skin. This also helps to get rid of wrinkles by increasing the elasticity of the skin.
Phytessence Wakame. This is a sea kelp found in Japan and contains vital minerals that moisturize the skin and keep it supple and firm. Wakame also helps to control the level of hyaluronic acid in the skin, this acid helps keep wrinkles at bay.
Grapeseed Oil. This fights free radicals and the signs of aging such as wrinkles and dark spots. It works as a protective film on your skin, helping to make sure that your skin’s natural moisture will not evaporate during the day.
Maracuja. This is an oil-controlling ingredient, making sure that oil production is manageable and thus your skin is not too oily.
Do’s and Don’ts in Dealing with Oily Skin
Oily skin needs special care and attention. Proper treatment of oily skin will help prevent the occurrence of acne and breakout. Here are some do’s and don’ts as you care for healthy skin.
- Do read the labels. Check to see that the moisturizer you use is “oil-free” and fragrance free - oil-free so that you can prevent further oiliness and fragrance-free so that it won’t aggravate your skin problems.
- Do cleanse and exfoliate your skin daily. Cleansing and exfoliating will not actually strip the skin of its moisture – it actually helps the moisture balance of the skin.
- Do drink a lot of water.
- Don’t touch your face too much. Avoid the temptation to touch your face, particularly if it has pimples.
- Don’t use too many layers of products on your skin. If possible, you can use products that provide dual or triple functions – such as a moisturizer that also control oil and protects from the son or a toner that also acts as exfoliator.
Facts About Moisturizers for Oily Skin
The great thing about oily skin is that it stays younger-looking, wrinkle-free and supple for longer, as compared to other skin types. However, oily skin is prone to pimples and breakouts, since oil production is more active than other skin types. That is why you need a moisturizer that is suited for the special needs of oily skin.
Here are a few facts to remember about using a moisturizer for oily skin:

I have oily skin, especially on my t-zone regions. I found the Made from Earth pH Equilibrant Moisturizer to be a great, light-weight but effective moisturizer for my oily skin.
It doesn't feel greasy and heavy; especially good on my oily t-zone and equally effective on dryer areas. I use it in combination with their Grapefruit Glycolic Scrub and have noticed a marked improvement in the last two months with my skin - particularly the neck and chest area (had some sun damage).
