Oily No More! Here’s Makeup for Your Oily Skin

Blot that Shine with makeup for oily skin
Of course you want to shine! Who doesn’t? But you’d want that shine to be in the right place – not on your forehead, your nose, or your entire face! You don’t want to look like an oil spill has just occurred and you were right in the middle of it.
Oily skin is the type that produces more oil than normal. This basically results not just in a greasy appearance, a dull complexion, whiteheads, large pores and blackheads.
Also, another big problem those with oily skin have is that they are prone to breakouts and acne. To help prevent this, you should choose makeup that not only blots out the oil but also does not block the pores. Blocked pores will yield to blackheads and skin inflammations. That’s why sleeping with makeup on is a real no-no, no matter what type your skin is.
Feel confident and let your naturally (shine-free) beauty come through with the right makeup.
Tips in buying makeup that works best for oily skin
For those with oily skin, it is important that you get the right kind of makeup. The wrong choice could lead to a whole plethora of problems – such as a greasy-feeling skin, clogged pores and breakouts. The right choice, on the other hand, can make give you that shine-free look.
Here are a few things to remember when you are buying makeup that will suit oily skin:
1. Know what you want. Your makeup should be the kind that will last for hours, or even for the whole day. Be sure to look at the label. Example of words you should look for are “matte”, “long-lasting”, “oil control”, “whole day cover” or “shine-free”. Another important label to look for would be “non-comodogenic”, so that any existing breakouts will not be worsened. “Non-comodogenic” means it won’t clog your pores.
2. Start with a good makeup primer. Primer is not just an unnecessary step – primer is actually a must-have for those with oily skin. It sets your skin so that it is a perfect canvass for you to lay your makeup on and it manages oiliness, making your foundation and makeup last longer.
3. The next step is to get a foundation that gives excellent coverage. You must remember that oily skin usually results in a darker complexion. A good foundation should then be one that is lighter than your actual skin tone – the right color being one shade lighter than your skin tone. A good foundation would be one that’s water-based, since this kind of makeup will not block your skin’s pores, even as it provides sheer coverage.
4. It’s better to use powder blush rather than a cream blush. Choose a powder blush that gives a matte texture. The same goes for eye shadows – powder in matte tones will work better.
5. Remember, mascara, which is important in opening up your eyes, should be waterproof to prevent it from smudging. You don’t want to look like you have panda eyes!
6. You should complete your shine-free look with pressed powder to seal in the foundation so that the oiliness doesn’t come through. Again, the powder should be a shade lighter. You really need to use powder, particularly if you’re using water-based makeup, since this kind of makeup rarely lasts the whole day. Remember to also touch up to ensure that your makeup stays longer.
Makeup to Avoid if you Have Oily Skin
If you have oily skin, you should take special care in choosing your makeup. You should buy makeup that is specifically designed for your skin type. The wrong choice can result in more skin problems such as eczema, allergic reactions or rosacea.
Here are some makeup products you should stay away from:
- Avoid makeup that has alcohol. Of course, you want to get rid of the oil from your skin, but stripping the oil will even result in your skin producing more.
- Avoid makeup that has mineral oil and other petroleum-based ingredients. These tend to clog the pores of your skin and will only exacerbate the possibility of breakouts, particularly for oily skin.
- Avoid makeup that has ingredients such as dimenthicone or bismuth oxychloride.
- Avoid makeup that contains dyes and fragrances.
- Avoid makeup with sericite. This ingredient which may be found in mineral makeup. Although it can help treat fine lines, it is not best for oily skin as it also results in a moderate shine for the skin and if you already have oily skin, you should go for makeup that gives a matte finish
The list may sound depressing and may make you want to ask in exasperation whether you can still wear makeup. Yes, the answer is, you can! You just need to choose the right kind of makeup, the makeup that will help care for your skin. There are makeup lines, particularly from popular cosmetic companies, that can protect from blemishes and adverse reactions.
Mineral Makeup works great for Oily Skin!
If you have oily skin, you may feel that it’s hard to find makeup that will enhance your beauty and help bring your complexion to as close as perfect as you can. Well, the good news is that there is mineral makeup that can help provide a flawless finish as well as ensuring that your skin’s oiliness is controlled.
Mineral makeup gives your skin a natural looking finish – but one that is enough to hide imperfections. This makeup also protects the skin from excessive production of sebum or oil.
The good thing about mineral makeup is that it is also beneficial to your skin. A key ingredient of mineral makeup is zinc oxide, which works to prevent inflammations and bacterial infections. In fact, dermatologists tell their patients who suffer from a variety of skin problems to use mineral makeup.
However, you have to remember that the best mineral makeup would be one that is made with natural materials.
When applying makeup, you can use either the blotting method or the sandwich method. The blotting method involves first using the blotting paper prior to putting on foundation and finishing powder. This method will not only get rid of excessive oil in your face, it will also prevent your makeup from becoming cakey. Meanwhile, the sandwich method involves putting on a layer of oil control powder, then putting on finishing powder. Only then should you fun on mineral foundation, then polish off with a finishing powder.

If you use mineral makeup, just make sure to avoid the ones with Bismuth, Mica and Pearl Powder. Those look HORRIBLE on oily skin becaues they cause you to shine even more than normal. My go-to face powder is Mattify! Ultra (a mineral veil that is completely matte and soaks up oil for hours), and my fave matte foundation is Estee Lauder Max Cover. It is such a pain being oily! But, for those of us who have to deal with it, you'll be happy to try these two products.
